3-Hour Challenge Success

The Town of Conception Bay South and the Pride in Your Community Committee held the 2nd Annual 3-Hour Challenge community clean-up on Saturday, June 7th. Over 2000 residents were out doing their part to beautify the Town.

The event was a huge success with over 70 community groups, including Scouts, Girl Guides, Cadets, Beavers and all schools, various residents and neighborhood groups pulling together to clean up the Town from East to West.

Over 1100 of them showed up to the stadium to cap the day with a community rally where there were free hotdogs and refreshments served by RBC Volunteers.

Live entertainment was performed by Fergus O’Byrne and Jim Payne while kids romped in the inflatable Sky High Amusement rides. There was free Tim Hortons coffee and Timbits donated of course by Tim Hortons, as well as several prize giveaways such as computers for schools, accommodations at local resorts, and ipods, just to name a few.

Count Down To Clean Up Is On

The town of CBS is once again reminding residents of the upcoming 3 Hour Challenge on Saturday, June 7th.

The Pride in your Community and the Town have come together with other local businesses and volunteers to host the 2nd Annual 3 Hour Challenge. Count down to clean up is on Web Address www.theshorelinenews.com This is a major community clean up that organizers say will go ahead rain or shine.

Residents, community groups, schools and businesses alike are encouraged to get involved. A rally will be held at the CBS Stadium from 12:30-2:00PM to celebrate the day. Many prizes will be given away for participating as well as hundreds of hats and t-shirts. Residents are encouraged to wear their shirts from last year to be eligible for prizes. There will be free hotdogs, and beverages for all participants as well.

Entertainment will be provided by Newfoundland’s own Fergus O’ Byrne and Jim Payne. For the kids, Sky High Amusements will be there and they have some new rides that are sure to be a big hit with the little ones.

Bright green garbage bags decked out with the 3 hour challenge logo, can be soon picked up by residents who want to part in the event at several location including; the Town Hall, Manuels River Chalet, Home Hardware, Dominion, Sobeys, CBS stadium, and the CBS Recreation Complex.

Janeway Telethon This Weekend

The annual Janeway Children’s Miracle Network Telethon is set to go this weekend. Executive Director Lynn Sparkes says it all begins Saturday and they’re looking forward to another successful year. Sparkes says this year’s theme is “The Heroes Among Us”. Sparkes says they’re looking for the public’s support to purchase equipment for the hospital. - VOCM News

Notably, the Conception Bay South LEO Club has been selling tickets on a Nintendo Wii this past month to raise money for the telethon. Last year we raised and donated $526.65 to The Janeway Children’s Miracle Network Telethon. This year we hope to beat that.

3-Hour Challenge Date Change

The CBS Town and the Pride in Your Community Commitee are asking residents to mark a new X on their calendar for June 7th, 2008.

There has been a slight date change in the time and date of the community clean up effort. The Conception Bay South Three Hour Clean-up will be happening on Saturday, June 7th from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM and not on the 8th which was previously announced by the Town.

The rally will also take place on Saturday, June 7th at the CBS Stadium from 12:30 - 2:00 PM. (following the clean-up).

Organizers with the event are hoping that businesses, schools, and residents will get involved and make this year’s clean-up even more sucessful then last year’s which was hugely popular. There will also be prizes free food and give-aways for people who participate.

Last year several schools participated but not all. The Town and the Clean-up Commitee want to change that. - The Shorline News

Janeway Telethon Launched

One of the most important fundraising events for children’s healthcare in the province is underway. The Janeway 2008 Children’s Miracle Network Telethon was launched yesterday and the Executive Director of the hospital’s foundation, Lynn Sparkes, says local support is evident. She says the province’s residents hold the Janeway in high regard and their continued support will help make sure the hospital has everything it needs for child healthcare. The Janeway’s 2008 Champion Child was introduced at yesterday’s Telethon launch. She is seventeen year old Lacey Hamlyn of Mount Pearl who was treated at the Janeway for meningitis. Hamlyn says the Janeway saved her life. Hamlyn says the hospital staff treated her so quickly that she suffered no side effects. She says it is an honor to represent the Janeway and its staff. Lacey will represent the province in Champions Across Canada. Corporate sponsor Wal-Mart presented Lacey with a one thousand dollar gift certificate. The telethon takes place May 31st and June 1st. - VOCM News

Holy Cats!

Lions Club International, District N-4 met this weekend at the Capital Hotel on Kenmount Rd.. District Governor, Joan Forward, says they donated thousands of dollars to several area organizations and projects.

VOCM Cares Foundation Special Projects Coordinator Jackie Dolomont and Karla Green, Administrative Assistant for the Foundation, addressed the gathering. The Lions N-4 group meets three times a year and their annual convention is scheduled for April. - VOCM News
